Distractions

Comments Off

I have a 75 pound dog lying in my lap with her nose on my touch pad. I can’t scroll pages or navigate so I’m typing instead. I’m not going to the right sites and she’s not happy about it. She doesn’t care about yarn or gaming stuff, she just wants to go here. I cranked out 20 or so rounds on the Rogue yesterday while I sat thinking that I should be doing some more work on the story I started. It’s funny how they go together. When I get started on knitting something it’s a great time for my mind to wander and as much as I have to concentrate on what I’m doing, I can still work around the ideas that are twisting around in my head.

I would have said my worst distraction was WoW up until a few weeks ago, but then again, I have made a habit of kitting while sitting around during raids and while traveling. I decided to take a break two weeks ago, and I haven’t logged in since. I’ve watched programs that I normally miss, and apparently I’ve missed a nice bit of guild drama as well. I keep saying I should hop back in and see what’s going on, but having my time back to do other things keeps winning out. I guess it’s dealing with a type of burnout, I never got to a point where I didn’t like playing. In fact, I have 3 characters at 70 with another at 65, plus a few little ones as well that were more for goofing around. I had been slacking off a bit to start with before the break, only logging in to do the nightly runs with the guild, but even that isn’t pulling me back in right now. On the other hand, I’m flying through a couple of knitting projects and getting things organized a bit around the house.

I’ve been using Scrivener to organize the writing and I’m quite happy with the way it works. I’ve run a few different writing programs in the past, and have always found them a bit rigid for the way I think. I have a habit of running in circles when I write, in terms of bouncing from one section of a story, to outlining, to coming up with a whole new environment, and I can do that with ease. The fact that I can pull outside information like web links, images, and such into the program helps a lot, and keeps me from getting distracted by the pretty blue and green stumble link. I’m still running the trial for now, but I think I’ll be grabbing the full version this weekend.

More things to suck away my time

I finally got around to getting a Ravelry account. Now I have to put all my ocd skills to work and get all my yarn and projects entered over there. In other news, I’m churning out some interesting thoughts on this whole story thing I’m working on, and I chucked Abney Park some money so I could download their new album (and they’re older stuff that I didn’t have yet) and it’s brilliant. The song from the video I linked a few back was awesome, but the rest of the album is wonderful for stirring things up in my head. It’s a wonderful mix of styles that definitely works for me, in particular the third track “Sleep Isabella” is stuck in my head. Definitely worth a listen, there are samples from all the tracks on their front page (go listen to them and buy them…really…go buy it, it’s good stuff)

What is this knitting thing?

I’ve been spending my days knitting instead of gaming, mainly due to watching In Therapy and trying to catch up on the series.  My sister in law just had a baby a week ago, so I’m on that baby knitting binge that comes quickly behind.  It seems like a few people I know are either expecting or trying, so I should probably start on a few things, because my current stash of premade baby bits is getting low.  Here’s the baby kimono, still needs a good wash and a ribbon attached. The pattern was in the Summer 2005 Interweave Knits, along with some cute little socks.

I’ve managed in the cleaning frenzy of late to go through and organize my stash a bit and actually broke down and frogged some FOs that have been lying in the bins with the yarn.  Now I’m sitting here, with a pair of socks that I need to finish up (just a few inches of foot left on both) and a scarf that I have every intention of finishing as well.  So what did I do last night?  Some time ago my mother in law found out that I kint, and sent me a huge care package from the UK, I had mentioned my love for cables and she not only sent a great book of patterns, but enough yarn to make at least two projects.  Granted it’s an acrylic wool blend, but honestly it’s a lovely neutral color and for a knock around cardi, it’s going to work well.  I’ve had this one marked as a want to do since I got the book, and I decided to get started on it as well last night.
