I really don’t want to give anything away on this movie, it was a brilliant survival horror/sci fi film and I definitely think it’s full of win. Earth is dying due to over population and an ark ship is sent to populate a new planet. The journey is to take 120 years, and the crews and general population alternate shifts in cryogenic stasis. The action starts when one of the flight crew for team 5 wakes up to an apparently dead ship, there are power spikes that are happening at intervals, but there is no way of knowing what is going on. Compiling the problem is that he has been in the sleep state for longer than plan which can of course, cause temporary memory loss.
He manages to revive a second member of his team, the third is missing and they begin trying to piece together what is happening on board the ship.

The film runs a little short of two hours, and honestly, there’s not a slow spot in the story. As the survivors run across each other, the back story starts to unfold. I had seen the preview, but hadn’t looked into the story at all on this one, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The baddies are very well done, and I have to say I had dreams about being chased around a hospital where the doors only stayed locked for 15 minutes all night, so yes, I highly recommend this one. :)

Moon

The new film by Duncan Jones is a though provoking lovely bit of classic science fiction. While most films in the genre lean on effects, this one relies on our ability to empathize with the characters. Sam Bell is the sole human on a mining operation on the moon. Due to a damaged satellite he can only send and receive taped messages. His only direct conversation is with Gerty, the ship’s computer. More: Read the rest of this entry…

Weekend of Awesomeness…

We got around to seeing the new Star Trek yesterday, and while I had some reservations about the whole “reboot” aspect, I was pleasantly surprised. I think it was the fact that you could recognize all the characters as their original counterparts from the start, at least I did. I think the franchise had reached at end up to this point. There wasn’t much left to do with it, and the universe is now fresh and ready for something slightly different.

I haven’t mentioned the Spook Show much lately, mainly because we just haven’t had the opportunity to go in the last few months. I seems that something always comes up that takes over our weekend schedules and ties us up on different projects. The good news is that we got the chance Friday night to head over to East Atlanta and catch one of the Blast Off Burlesque shows. All I can saw is WOW! After seeing them do routines through the skits before movies once a month, it was amazing to see a full blown adult burlesque show. I can’t explain the cool retro vibe that was there, so I’ll just let you see for yourselves.

After much shuffling of schedules

It appears that we will be grabbing the kid after his volunteer shift at the natural history museum (where he has to deal with people using Jesus and dinosaur in the same sentence and not laugh at them I might add) We’ll head out to see Trek then and then hit the new X Men on Sunday. Not a bad weekend if everything goes as planned.

Have something I have to try and pick up tomorrow afternoon. It should be very cool and I’ll say what it is after I get them. Also have plans to see Star Trek tomorrow night after the kid’s school dance, it will be a late one…but it’s Trek…who cares :)
