Finally got around to upgrading my os this morning. I’m happily running the newest ubuntu version and everything looks to be running fine. I still have the old stuff on a separate partition in case I blow something up, but I think I’ll be able to pull it out soon and then just use that section as my file storage.
Now the next step is to get up and running on all the web apps I need to learn. It’s one thing I’ve put off for some time, I’ve been using linux but still doing all my web work on the mac or in windows, so now I’ve decided to make the effort to get in and wrap my head around the tools I have here.
I futzed around with World of Warcraft and finally got it installed under Ubuntu. It wasn’t that difficult to do, and everything appears stable. I just have to get all of my mods installed so I can get back to the setup that I’m used to. I also killed off my LOTR online account. The husband and I picked up copies a few months back, played for a week, and haven’t logged back in. The game was lovely to look at, and while the quests and such weren’t that much different from what we were already playing, it just didn’t click for me.
What’s funny to me is that I found out that Eve will run on a native linux client. I beta tested this one many many years ago, ok, it was about 5 years, but in terms of gaming that’s a long time. I was surprised that I still have a character in the system, and she’s got ok skills for a long dead noob, but I didin’t remember a lot about playing so I started up a new character. I remember what I like about this one, it’s the learning over time, you can kick off a training point and go to bed, it will be done when you wake up and you kick off another one. I also remember that flying into unmonitored space will get you killed really fast. Yeah, I remembered that about 5 seconds before my ship got blown up by some gankers that were stalking one of the gates. I will remember to track paths by secure space, not by fastest route from now on.
how many windows games I play can I get working under linux? So far the answer is 2…. WoW runs pretty well, I was a bit concerned because I am a raid healer and any lag can really screw me up during big fights, but everything runs great so far. The other game, which I haven’t played since beta is Eve, they’ve made a ton of changes to the game since I saw it last and offer a native linux client for running it. Woot, space battles and giant battle cows, looks like I have everything covered at the moment.
