I’m sitting here at my desk with the laptop at the moment because vista decided that I needed a disk check. That’s a 250g disk, and it wouldn’t let me “click any button to exit the check” …bastards. Luckily I have this spiffy Mac that I have yet to call names aside from that time where I was looking for something and had no idea where it was or what it was called and I may have said something not so nice. Networking sucks.
I’ve been tossing around some ideas here on paper and digitally, and I think I’m on my way to something that might actually work. I’m not going to go too nuts and I think short stories are in order to help flesh out some bits and solidify the environment. I did pick up a great book for the kid this morning, and being that he’s at his dad’s tonight, I will have time to read it before handing it over and hearing the whole story before I get a chance to even crack the cover like most of the books he gets. Larklight, by Phillip Reeve, so far I’m laughing hysterically at it and the whole space pirate thing is brilliant. If you ever wanted a great book to get kids into classic steampunk, this would be a great place to start. I’ve also dug out a copy of the Difference Engine, by William Gibson, in case he wants to try something a bit more challenging. Personally I love Gibson, but his writing is very dense. We’ll see if the kid gets that far.
This was my desk. The picture was taken mid cleaning so it looks a lot less cluttered than it was.

We’ve talked around getting something better for myself and the kid with more room for both, so thanks to tax refunds we did and now we’re working at setting everything up like this…

I’m still trying to find places to put all the stuff that I had piled on the bookshelves and in the corners of the old desk, there are probably going to be a few more trips to Ikea and some power tools involved, but that’s for later. Shelves or cabinets where the cork boards are is going to happen.
I also sucked up and got this over the weekend…

I have promised myself that it’s going to be for writing, so I don’t get stuck having to sit here to do everything, and I’m not going to install any games *coughwarcraftcough* on it. We’ll see how long that lasts, anyone wanna place bets, now is the time.
yep, we’re heading to see the Spiderwick Chronicles today. I’m hoping it’s half as good as the books.
Update:: It’s not a bad movie, but it’s not the books. I’ll gripe tomorrow, I’m currently playing with my new toy. I’ll just leave it by saying that I really hate that the powers that be can’t let people have bad things happen in something that kids might watch.
We hit B&N yesterday to pick up some ruby manuals for the husband and I found a couple books that ended up following me home as well. Rowan is one of those groups of designers that can go from ‘Oh wow I must make that now in 10 different colors and wear nothing else ever again” to “Oh wow what the hell were they smoking when they came up with that one” in a single turn of a page. Luckily Knitting for Him manages to be a book full of the first statement. The husband said he liked some of them. This doesn’t mean that he’s getting a sweater, because he complains about them being too warm here in Georgia, but it means that I can make him one that I can wear. (yes a plan so cunning you can stick a tail on it and call it a weasel)
Next into the shopping cart was Knit Kimono, some are a bit more than I would want to deal with, and I’m not one of those people that finds the need to wear quirky ethnic clothing to be cool, but a few of the designs are dead on awesome, great long lounge around the house looking fabulous kind of things that I want to wear when I win the lottery and can sit around and watch someone else don the pearls and push the dyson around.
Last but cutest is a book of Amigurumi, there was a small squee that may have happened in the store while looking through this one, but I’m not going to say it was me. We’ll all just agree, nod and move on from there.
Looks like I’m going to have a lot to do now. I am trying to finish up a few things to ship over to my sister in law for her new baby, and some net friends just let it slip that they’re expecting as well. I have much to do, but now I can make cute little toys to go with the clothes.
I’m awake on Saturday morning at 7 am and the first thing I do after turning on the kettle to make tea is sit down and open this window. Apparently the whole “28 times repeating a task makes it a habit” may have some truth to it. I didn’t get to the movie yesterday, we’re opting to do it today because there will be less traffic and we’re avoiding the theater near the bowels of hell the mall. I’m curious to see this film now more than I was after I read some of the reviews yesterday. It seems that all established critics generally thing it’s a bunch of crap, but every “normal person” review that I’ve read think it’s great. Now I’m the kind of person who can find something good in the worst piece of dreck known to mankind, so we’ll see how it pans out.
I really should be getting some shopping done as well this week. I mentioned the whole gift card Christmas, and true to form my dad sent me a check to go buy ourselves something. How screwed up is that? I mentioned that we were looking at new mattresses and some bookshelves for the upstairs room (Ikea is your friend) and so he thought it made the most sense to just give us this early so we could buy what we needed. The kid is the only one who really gets the gifts under the tree, the rest of us get envelopes, and now I’m getting mine 3 weeks early so I can purchase my own gift. I’m not sure how I feel about it. It’s great because we’ll get something we need, but at the same time, there’s the element of surprise that gets thrown right out the window.
