Spring Break Begins

Comments Off

It’s Monday, and the kid is off for the week. His dad and I got together and decided to lift the grounding/video game ban because I personally will go insane if he has nothing to do but sit around and read books and expect me to entertain him for the whole week. On a good point, the two weeks of no fun appears to have made an impression as his room is clean, not just clean by picking things up but clean to the point that I’m not afraid of my parents coming this weekend to visit clean. He is also sitting on a 95 in math so far this period and the other grades are showing a bit of improvement as well. Now to see if I can live through a week of Smash Bros. and Halo.

What do you do…

The kid is having issues at school again, mainly in math. We get a report every 3 weeks from the teacher and he’s dropping again. The bad part is, it’s the extra work that he could be doing to pull up his overall grade that’s not getting turned in. She gives them extra credit work, it doesn’t count against them if they don’t do it, but it counts toward a portion of their grade if they do it. I know for a fact he’s doing the work, he’s just not turning it in and keeping his classroom folder up to date. I don’t know what to do at this point. We have gone in and talked to the teacher, I’ve talked to him, and sat down and helped him reorganize his notebooks and such. The only thing left here is to unplug him. I hate that option, but I can’t think of any other way of getting the point across.

I’m sitting here at my desk with the laptop at the moment because vista decided that I needed a disk check.  That’s a 250g disk, and it wouldn’t let me “click any button to exit the check” …bastards.  Luckily I have this spiffy Mac that I have yet to call names aside from that time where I was looking for something and had no idea where it was or what it was called and I may have said something not so nice.  Networking sucks.

I’ve been tossing around some ideas here on paper and digitally, and I think I’m on my way to something that might actually work.  I’m not going to go too nuts and I think short stories are in order to help flesh out some bits and solidify the environment.  I did pick up a great book for the kid this morning, and being that he’s at his dad’s tonight, I will have time to read it before handing it over and hearing the whole story before I get a chance to even crack the cover like most of the books he gets.  Larklight, by Phillip Reeve, so far I’m laughing hysterically at it and the whole space pirate thing is brilliant.  If you ever wanted a great book to get kids into classic steampunk, this would be a great place to start.  I’ve also dug out a copy of the Difference Engine, by William Gibson, in case he wants to try something a bit more challenging.  Personally I love Gibson, but his writing is very dense.  We’ll see if the kid gets that far. :)
