I just ran across this article and I have to read this. There are a few people who know me personally that have probably heard me rant more than once about the prevalence of mental health drugs and the insane way that, to me, things have been blown out of proportion by the medical/psychological professions. One of my favorite examples is people who are “shy.” Many years ago when I was in school there were kids that didn’t like to do things with groups, they were uncomfortable when having to interact with people and generally kept to themselves. They were shy, and the common response was, “You’ll get over it, just get out there and do it.” Now there are wonderful labels like Social Anxiety Disorder and a host of other things that can readily be treated with equally new and wonderful drugs.
This really pisses me off beyond words sometimes. I’ve always believed that there were secret meetings where “those in charge of things” would sit together, get drunk and say to themselves, “what can we get them to believe now?” It looks like I wasn’t that far off.
Please don’t get your panties in a bunch and send me hate mail over this because you know a cousin of a friend’s friend and blah blah blah. I know that there are people who seriously have issues to the point of not being functional and for those, I do believe that if treated with therapy and medications, it can help the situation. What gripes me is that we live in a world where you see ads for drugs on tv and have no idea what the fuck they’re for, but by the gods if you have tiredness, aches, loss of appetite, and foot cramps, you should ask your doctor if somethingoftizine is right for you.
