Decisions, Decisions

I’ve been futzing around with a custom template for a bit, and honestly, I’m tired of dealing with it already. I find myself playing around with code more than writing so I’ve decided to go back to using other people’s themes so I can concentrate on the content. There are probably a few bits that I need to tweak with this one, and I will warn that I pulled down a few different themes to play around with depending on my mood.

Hopefully I’ll settle in soon and get back to the business of writing. Now if I can stop myself from spending the day on Twitter and Plurk, I’ll be set :)

Things I learned last night

The guys from Google are really cool (not just because they bought a round of drinks and had the meeting in a kick ass sushi bar).

Healthy competition in the market (regardless of what market) is a good thing. It encourages innovation and benefits everyone.

Sometimes people don’t have complex motives, they just want to simplify the way that we have to deal with things.

If someone gives you all the ingredients to make the world’s greatest cake, they shouldn’t be expected to advertise it for you. If you create something that is a good product, people will find it and use it.

Be honest about what you know. More importantly, be honest about what you don’t know, but point people in the right direction to find the answers they need.

There are times when doing something for the right reasons outweighs doing something for a profit.

Broadcasting how great you are can only get you so far. Engaging in a dialog and proving that you know what you’re talking about is much more valuable in the long run.

The net is going to change. Communication and sharing information is going to change. Get ready to deal with the future now, because it’s going to happen whether you’re ready or not.

Getting back to basics

I’ve gotten sucked into some conversations lately on social media and it’s triggering the idiot detector in full force. I’m working on some posts, it’s just taking a bit longer than I expected. It’s been a while since I’ve tried to do a bit more than just spew out what I’m doing in game or around the house. I’m also making a point of trying not to use my typical vocabulary (ya know…the f, s, d, c, and p words) because I would actually like to prove that I can converse with normal people occasionally.

It’s funny that I started getting back into the idea of building templates and throwing myself on the market for some basic work, and I find myself throwing my two cents in on a lot more than I had intended. I am still as passionate about coding as I’ve always been, and making something that is standards compliant is a goal that I’m sticking with. I’m learning the hard way that not everyone does this, as you can see by the lack of third party plugins that I am using. I’m also taking this time to learn some new things as well, and hopefully I’m going to start trying to get some things up here for others to use.

We’ve hit a tight spot here in regards to bills and cashflow, so we’re cutting back on just about everything, including games that have subscriptions. While I thought I would miss that socialization, I don’t, because I’m too busy working on other things right now and I’m seeing a better use of my time during the day. I’m actually getting things done more often than not, except for the yard, and that’s because it’s hot as hell and I’m not going out there.

What this all boils down to, is that the focus of things around here is probably going to change a bit as I get back into doing more web related posts instead of gaming and nose picking by my teenager. I’m sure it won’t stop altogether, because frankly, he’s not going to stop doing stupid things, and I’m not going to want to stop posting them. That’s the joy of being a parent.
