We got to meet up with the people from the Spook Show last night. The husband is going to help get their website reorganized and running. It’s a fun thing we do every month, and I know I go on about it sometimes, but it’s such a great way for getting kids to see some of the classic films in a fun, silly environment.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think the whole shock/torture/horror thing has gone a bit off. I love being scared, but there’s a difference between scary and just grossed out and disgusted. Granted, kids now see so much more than we did (hell I can’t believe I just said that) We used to love Saturday horror movies on tv. Where we grew up there was Dr. Shock and Dingbat, and every Saturday night at midnight you would get a double feature, usually one of the Hammer films and something else.
I think it’s why I am enjoying the new Dr. Who series so much right now. It’s the whole fun to be scared without all the “have to see everything” mentality that is flooding the theaters now. There are still some great films out there that fill the gap with ghosts and creatures that leave something to the imagination. Perhaps that’s part of the problem. We’ve gone so far with effects and such that there’s no reason for using imagination any more, we can see and do it all.

I love the old horror films. So much better than today’s ghastly offerings. I do worry that the next generation is going to be severely lacking in the imagination department. Our Saturday creepshow host was Dr. Sanguinary. He was a kick. The one show I remember the most was when Vampira came to visit and he was bowing and scraping all over the place.

These guys are great, and it’s so cool to know that they get a kick out of all the kids that are coming to the afternoon shows they do. We’re going to have to start getting there earlier if we want good seats =)
