I’m awake on Saturday morning at 7 am and the first thing I do after turning on the kettle to make tea is sit down and open this window. Apparently the whole “28 times repeating a task makes it a habit” may have some truth to it. I didn’t get to the movie yesterday, we’re opting to do it today because there will be less traffic and we’re avoiding the theater near the bowels of hell the mall. I’m curious to see this film now more than I was after I read some of the reviews yesterday. It seems that all established critics generally thing it’s a bunch of crap, but every “normal person” review that I’ve read think it’s great. Now I’m the kind of person who can find something good in the worst piece of dreck known to mankind, so we’ll see how it pans out.
I really should be getting some shopping done as well this week. I mentioned the whole gift card Christmas, and true to form my dad sent me a check to go buy ourselves something. How screwed up is that? I mentioned that we were looking at new mattresses and some bookshelves for the upstairs room (Ikea is your friend) and so he thought it made the most sense to just give us this early so we could buy what we needed. The kid is the only one who really gets the gifts under the tree, the rest of us get envelopes, and now I’m getting mine 3 weeks early so I can purchase my own gift. I’m not sure how I feel about it. It’s great because we’ll get something we need, but at the same time, there’s the element of surprise that gets thrown right out the window.

Yeah, Christmas started to go by the way of birthdays once I got older and started having kids. Now we have to “capture the magic” with the kids and I’ve found I’m just not organized enough for it.
I had the best holidays when I was little with the surprises and heaping mounds of presents under the tree (remember these are kid recollections, there were probably five presents, but there were three of us kids and nothing went under the tree until Christmas Eve). It’s an experience Paco and I can’t seem to recreate for our kids, but we try, we try.
Maybe you could rip the tags off your mattress on Christmas morning, a celebration of ownership, “Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law”. Ha!

I was thinking of some other way of celebrating, but that’s probably more family friendly

I had to teach my husband about surprising me at Christmas. Without kids, though, it is really tough to have a festive Christmas spirit.

i find that my favorite part of christmas now is before i open my gifts. seeing them under the tree i can imagine that anything is in those colorfully wrapped boxes. my wildest dreams, something i never thought about wanting but its absolutely perfect could be sitting there right then. naturally, most of the gifts are things i’ve asked for, which i enjoy and want, but still that moment of “anything’s possible” makes the gifting part of christmas for me.
